I was visiting with a customer, recently, when he reminded me of an incident several years ago. This customer has a manufacturing process that near the end of the line, their product has to go through a 200 ft oven on a conveyor. This oven is 400 degrees. This conveyor is chain driven and for many years the chain was lubricated by Hydrotex 520 Hi Temperature chain oil. A competitor had come in and promised the new plant manager he could accomplish adequate lubrication of the chain for about half the price. His parting words were, “It’s the same stuff at half the price”.

The plant manager, thinking he was acting in the best interest of the plant, bought a drum of this chain lube. This was all without the knowledge of the maintenance manager nor myself.

It wasn’t 10 minutes into applying the new chain oil that the new lubricant starting smoking. It was bad enough that an emergency situation was declared, evacuating the plant, and authorities were called in.

They have been a loyal fan of the Hydrotex 520 High Temperature Chain oil to this day.

Based on the production and supply of Ethanol and Ethanol Blended Fuels, there is a paradigm shift taking place in the municipal fire department market which greatly benefits F-500 Encapsulator Agent. The situation is that AFFF foam is not adequate for these Ethanol applications; therefore, the entire foam industry, including ourselves who produce Pinnacle Foam, are guiding municipal fire departments from a non effective $19.95/gallon AFFF to a $29.95/gallon AR-AFFF. F-500 Encapsulator agent which can both encapsulate and extinguish Ethanol and Ethanol Blended Fuels is positioned as more cost effective than AR-AFFF. Due to performance coupled with tight budgets this positions F-500 Encapsulator Agent as the Municipal Fire Department Product of Choice.

Clean Energy Myth #1

MYTH: A common misperception is that energy companies have no intention of investing in clean energy, so government programs must do the heavy lifting

FACT: U.S.- based oil and gas companies have spent over $121 billion from 2000 through 2007 on new energy technologies in the North American market, says the Energy Information Administration.

 $16 billion went for advanced-technology vehicles, including electric cars

 In all, oil and gas firms ponied up almost 70% of all funds U.S. companies invested in new energy sources and 35% of all the money spent developing and researching electric vehicles.

Clean Energy Myth #2

MYTH: Renewables will replace conventional energy sources in the next 20 years

FACT: Despite years of government subsidies, state-level mandates, and the green movement’s love of renewable technology; Coal, oil, and natural gas will STILL provide 79% of the energy in the U.S. in 2030, according to the Energy Information Administration.

 That would be a relatively small change from the 84% of U.S. energy these sources were responsible for in 2007

Prior to 2008, this North Carolina facility had been experiencing system performance concerns on their hot oil embossing process. Besides uneven heat distribution, there were concerns due to leaking seals and the toxic nature of their HTO fluid. Worker safety concerns had mandated multiple production shutdowns due to leaking fluid.

After reviewing all the parameters and customer goals, the Hydrotex® Technical Team developed a program to effectively remove all of the oil, flush and refill the system in order to bring it up to operating conditions over a three day weekend.

Hydrotex HTS Flush dissolved heavy carbon deposits in the system without concern of dislodging hard deposits and damaging the pump. The customer observed that the supply pressures were higher and they now experience improved production efficiency on the hot oil embosser due to even heat distribution across the entire length of the unit. After three years, oil analysis confirms that the Hydrotex HTO maintains optimal performance. The percentage of production seconds from the hot oil embosser have been greatly reduced which has led to a significant savings and increased production efficiencies.

This facility was also experiencing excessive bearing failures due to mixing incompatible greases and applying greases that were not fit for the application. After reviewing all the requirements, it was decided to condense the number of greases plant-wide from seven to two compatible greases. In addition, a color coding system was established to differentiate greases.

Cross contamination concerns and application mistakes have since disappeared. As a result, bearing failures are now almost non-existent. Inventory control has improved and grease usage has decreased due to switching to superior performing grease and establishing lubrication management processes.

In 2009 and 2010 Hydrotex® worked with a large milling operation to develop Energy Saving Hydrosynthetic® Blower Oil. It provides reduced energy costs, extends lubricant lifecycles and reduces waste in pneumatic conveying rotary lobe blower applications. A major concern was the performance and downtime of the positive displacement blowers used to transport product throughout the mill. Blower downtime is very costly and repairs are expensive.

Using the Hydrotex Lubrication Management Process, energy studies were completed on 32 blowers in the mill with results averaging decreases of $700 per unit in annual energy costs. The mill’s Corporate Engineering Department reviewed the study and determined this single mill had reduced the annual energy consumption by 137,000 kWh or 6%. The savings is enough to provide energy to 10.7 average American homes per year.

Historically, the mill changed blower oil based on an average 90-day maintenance schedule. With the introduction of the Hydrotex blower oil and an Oil Analysis Program the majority of applications extended drain cycles to once per year; the average unit operating temperature was reduced by 22%. In addition, the mill reduced blower waste oil by 72 gallons annually.

Since implementing the Hydrotex Lubrication Management Process plant-wide, the mill has achieved a 70% reduction in annual lubrication consumption, improved productivity and decreased maintenance and downtime. All lubrication practices were implemented using existing maintenance time allocations and manpower. The cost savings has more than offset the total annual cost of lubrication for the mill.

The mill was presented with a corporate sustainability award based on these changes and the implementation of the Hydrotex Lubrication Management Process.
By extending this program to the other milling facilities, the milling operation estimates a realized energy reduction of 2,568,750 kWh per year or the equivalent energy to power 201 average American homes. The savings from increased energy efficiency and improved operating rates for over 400 blowers in the milling operation is approximately $420,000 annually. Additionally 1,650 gallons of waste oil are eliminated each year.

Working in collaboration, the milling operation and Hydrotex developed a successful and sustainable Lubrication Management Process that is now implemented across all milling locations.

Approximately 2,568,750 kWh of conserved electricity, resulting in an Indirect Carbon Footprint Reduction of 4,067,524 pounds of CO2. The amount of electricity saved is enough to power the needs of 201 homes for the average American family for one year.1	Additionally 1,650 gallons of waste oil was eliminated each year.

The US Department of Energy under Resource Conservation Hierarchy lists the most preferable option as, the prevention of waste; a considered action step is source reduction thru extended drain intervals.

The Impact Analysis total does not include savings from component failure avoidance, labor, and fluid disposal & filter costs normally incurred for fluid drains, which were realized but excluded from this analysis. Costs associated with filtering prior incoming fluid were also excluded.

1Savings are based on EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, for details visit: http://www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html	Actual realized CO2 reduction may differ based on fuel mix used by the generating facility.
